If he\'s not a horse for the course at Firestone Country Club, then he\'s certainly a Tiger for the track.
Tiger Woods is looking to continue his incredible run of success at the Akron, Ohio, course Thursday when first-round play begins in the World Golf Championships\' Bridgestone Invitational. In eight starts at the event, the world\'s top-ranked player has won five times, finished second once and never finished worse than fourth.
\"Each and every year I\'ve played this golf course, it just seems to have worked out,\" Woods told reporters Wednesday as he prepared to defend his title after beating Stewart Cink in a playoff last year.
\"I don\'t know what it is about this golf course; it just looks right. For some reason I\'ve had some success here.\"
Indeed, he has. In 32 rounds at Firestone, Woods has shot in the 60s a total of 23 times and is a total of 83 under par.
\"I\'ve had some success here, but I think it\'s just because I love old, traditional golf courses,\" Woods said. \"We don\'t get a chance to play these types of venues anymore. There are certain venues that I think all the players thoroughly enjoy playing, and this is one of them.\"
Woods said he enjoys the tree-lined course where what you see is normally what you get. He won three straight at Firestone from 1999-2001, including a record-setting performance in 2000 when he equaled the course record of 61 and shot a 21-under-par 259 for the tournament.
\"There are no elephant burial grounds out there -- it\'s right there in front of you and you just have to go play,\" Woods said. \"This golf course, its only defense really is the weather. It\'s soft, and the guys are going to go low.
\"But if it\'s firm like it is now, then I think the guys are going to have a hard time making birdies.\"
Woods ranks Firestone among his favorite places to play.
\"I\'ve always felt comfortable here and if you look at my record overall over the years, it\'s been pretty good,\" Woods said. \"I think there are basically four venues that I\'ve had a lot of success at. This is one of them . (along with) Torrey Pines, Augusta and St. Andrews.
\"Those are places I seem to play well every time I go there. Certain golf courses just fit your eye and it\'s hard to explain, but this is one of them for me.\"
